Hayes Case Developments: News Reporters Become News Makers In Cameron County Case

The aggressive defense team from the Bennett Law Firm and Michael Lee Young issued subpoenas last Friday for news reporters in the Arthur Daniel Hayes medical treatment case. When the print and TV reporters were sworn-in by Judge Abel Limas, they were instructed that they were witnesses in the case and would have to report back if the case went to trial.

Subpoenas were issued after the Cameron County District Attorney filed an inappropriate motion for a gag order. The defense team believed it was filed to keep them from responding to the false statements given by the District Attorney. The Motion to Restrict Publicity and the Motion to Recuse Cameron County District Attorney Armando Villalobos were passed when the Court set a trial date for April 30, 2007. The history of the case that has a resemblance to the Duke lacrosse rape case and the other filings are given below.

Background information:

Pastor Daniel Arthur Hayes, 56, is charged with one count of sexual assault, three counts of practicing medicine without a license, one count of Medicaid fraud and one count of theft. According to the Texas Attorney General’s Office, these alleged incidents took place between August and October 2002.

Hayes was arrested Dec. 19, 2006 by the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office. He was released from the Carrizalez-Rucker Detention Center in Olmito on Dec. 21, after posting a $75,000 reduced bond on all charges. For more information, please continue reading below.
